Is it just a matter of convenience that the officers have the dispatcher look people up, or do officers not have full MDT capabilities? It seems like all cruisers have MDTs, and it sounds like officers have the ability to do these lookups themselves. It seems pretty routine to call in a traffic stop and ask that the plate be run, and then they'll give the operator's info and ask that it be run, too. Often, in response to an accident, they'll say they're "going to book it," or ask the dispatcher to "save me a spot in the book." What exactly are they referring to? The terminology sounds different from when they're arresting someone or issuing a summons, so I don't think it means "booking" in the classic police sense. What is an IRO? I hear them requested often, but there's never been enough context for me to guess what they mean. I've been listening to Mass State Police for a bit now, and I've got the hang of their 10-codes, use of "BDL" to mean "breakdown lane," and their constant use of the phrase "make the flip."
